Judo classes benefit growing children far beyond the dojo and in many real-world scenarios. Our structured classes are designed to improve coordination, physical fitness, mental strength, as well as gain valuable psycho-social skills.
The head coach, Joseph Castillo, is an IJF qualified instructor and coach accredited by the Malta Judo Federation and the Malta Olympic Committee.
He is assisted by Angela Castillo who is an IJF qualified club manager.
He also holds the position of Youth Director at the Malta Judo Federation.
Joseph assisted the International Judo Federation in documenting the Judo Syllabus as an inventory of Knowledge, Skills and Competences.
Our school started in October 2012. Shiro in Japanese means castle here meaning protection, and strength. Shiro (Saigo) is also the name of one of the first four students of Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo.
Since the beginning our school has participated with success in local and foreign events.
Through ongoing participation and knowledge update, our school aims to be the leading judo school in Kodokan judo in Malta.
In 2018, the school was officially recognized by the International Judo Federation to teach Kodokan Judo.
Shirojudokwai is registered with SportsMalta and the Voluntary Organization
Shirojudokwai is a school dedicated to teach Judo along the principles of long term athelete development.
But judo is more than a sport. Shirojudokwai is committed to preserve and promote the judo ideal. Technical skills are taught alongside competition skills in order that one might strengthen the other.
The school was established to give students the opportunity to strive towards the highest level of judo, both mentally and physically in an atmosphere of friendship and mutual respect.
Therefore, each lesson is an all over workout to improve Agility, Balance, Coordination, Speed and Mental Health.
These classes are open to individuals age 11 years and over. This class is for judokas who have both the technical ability and or mental attributes to train at a high level. At this stage 12 year old will start their first experience in local and foreign competitions.
Mondays 7:30pm to 8:30pm
Wednesdays 7:30pm to 8:30pm
These classes are open to children age 8/9 years to 11years. This class will suit children who are ready to start training twice per week and take judo a little more seriously. Emphasis here will be on developing their technical repertoire and introduction to technical randori.
Mondays 6:30pm to 7:15pm
Wednesdays 6:30pm to 7:15pm
These classes are open to children age 5/6 years to 7/8 years. It will teach core skills and the fundamentals of judo, such as balance, movement and posture. These are the building blocks for all sports.
